The word “tithe” or "tithing" is not scriptural in the New Testament

By: Hartley Edorodion

The word “tithe” or "tithing" is not scriptural in the New Testament. “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye tithe mint and anise and cummin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law, justice, and mercy, and faith: but these ye ought to have done, and not to have left the other undone” (Matthew 23:23). Here, the Lord Jesus was talking to the scribes and Pharisees. He was talking to the hypocrites and woe unto them. He was not talking to the Christians. Tithe and keep tithing if you are a scribe or a Pharisee. Tithe if you are a hypocrite. By the way, tithing in this verse and like every other verse in the Bible is not with money but with mint and anise and cumin – farm produce. God warned against the use of money for tithing in the Bible (Deuteronomy 14:22-29). Giving 10 per cent every month to the church as a free offering is not a problem. The problem is the word “tithe”. Tithe or tithing is not scriptural in the New Testament. That is the reason Jesus did not preach it, apostle Peter did not preach it, apostle Paul, James, John, and the others did not preach it. I wonder where your pastor gets the message from. Maybe your pastor knows better or maybe he is using a different New Testament. The word “tithe” or “tithing” brings the children (Christians) under bondage and condemnation. But “If therefore the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:36) and “There is therefore now no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). Again, “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us; for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree” (Galatians 3:13) – this includes the curse on the law of tithe in Malachi 3:8-9. Tithe or tithing is of the law, “And they indeed of the sons of Levi that receive the priest's office have commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though these have come out of the loins of Abraham” (Hebrews 7:5). It will shock you to know that the Christians that tithe are actually the ones under the curse, “For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one who continueth not in all things that are written in the book of the law, to do them” (Galatians 3:10). By the way, 10 per cent is not commitment. For example, 10 per cent commitment to your marriage or your workplace is not any commitment. So, tithe or tithing is not even any commitment in the New Testament. Be free indeed! God bless you. Contact us to learn more.
